My published work in May/June 2021

These past two months of journalism work have demonstrated how the tendrils of COVID-19 continue to influence us, from novel studies analyzing how cannabis can mitigate coronavirus symptoms to the strange new return of US summer camps.

BBC NewsProfiling journalists joining Substack

Nothing like dipping my toes back into the startup waters. I’ve been covering startup culture for more than 15 years, and it is always fulfilling to profile entrepreneurs with grit and a compelling idea. I pitched this Substack feature to my editor at BBC News and he gravitated towards it right away. And now it’s giving me idea to how I can offer my fans a compelling newsletter beyond what I do now with Mailchimp. Hmmm.

Fodor’sCan I Send My Kids to Summer Camp?

As a regular contributor to Fodor’s, I am always on the lookout for engaging stories related to travel. A few months ago I thought, Hmm, parents must really want their kids to return to summer camp, considering how everyone stayed home last summer.

So began the seed of a pitch that ended up winning favour with my Fodor’s editor and evolving into this multi-interviewee report on how camps are adapting to COVID with a slew of new policies.

The Toronto StarBuddies in Bad Times, the country’s longest-running queer theatre company, looks to the future while reckoning with its past

Those Star editors love their lengthy headlines, don’t they? It makes sense, considering the longevity of Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Canada’s oldest queer theatre company, headquartered in the Yonge and Wellesley area of downtown Toronto. This theatre is loaded with history, which I was happy to unpack with the programming director over a lengthy tour of the space in the spring.

I can’t wait to see how they progress in the next few decades.

Bold CommerceA headless perspective and the Amazon factor

One of my latest clients is a brand specializing in ecommerce apps focused on subscriptions and checkout, and I am excited to share with you my first report for Bold Commerce. Focusing on headless commerce and how Amazon excels in what they do, this article is one of many articles I’ll be completing for the Winnipeg business in the coming year.

Cannabis HealthHopeful Studies Show Cannabis May Help Treat Covid-19’s Deadly Cytokine Storms

While I’m not reporting on the cannabis industry as intensely as I was in the past two years, I’ve been feeling what Cannabis Health has been published. This is my latest report, detailing how new studies are revealing how certain cannabanoids can help fight those cytokine storms that ravage COVID-19 patients. This research is truly in its embryonic stages, but the first results are giving hope to researchers studying COVID’s riotous symptoms.
